In the continuously evolving field of industrial automation, certain technologies inevitably become outdated, leading to the discontinuation of key products by popular suppliers. In April 2024, Rockwell Automation announced the termination of the Allen-Bradley 1784-U2CN port interface cable and confirmed there would be no direct replacement within their product line. Softing AG has stepped in to offer a solution in response to this gap. Softing AG will introduce the usbLink CN, a robust ControlNet interface that ensures continued compatibility and support for users reliant on this critical technology.

Ever Had a Cable Break or Go Missing?

A while back, it seemed like Allen-Bradley had a unique cable for anything and everything, and if they didn’t have the cable, you would be in trouble. Over the years, they have standardized their cabling to more common types. However, with the discontinuation of the 1784-U2CN, Softing AG is stepping in to support the USB to ControlNet cable.

Softing AG's usbLink CN offers users a seamless interface between a USB 2.0 laptop port and an RJ45 connection for integrating into ControlNet networks. This solution will create a straightforward setup for ControlNet devices, enabling efficient configuration and management through RSLinx and RSNetWorx for optimized ControlNet communications.

About the Rockwell Technology Partner Program.

The Rockwell Technology Partner Program aims to foster a collaborative partner ecosystem that drives co-innovation and enhances customer experiences. This initiative recognizes that simply purchasing products is insufficient; organizations must align with top-tier suppliers who offer advanced automation solutions, application expertise, and exceptional support. Technology Partners play a pivotal role by contributing a diverse array of products that complement the Rockwell Automation portfolio. Deane Horn, Director of Marketing at Softing AG stated it best: “As part of the Rockwell Technology Partner Program, we are happy to have a relationship with Rockwell that allows us to take on product lifecycle extensions that help customers extend the life of their legacy applications,”

These strategic alliances combine the technical and commercial strengths of both Rockwell Automation and its partners to deliver enhanced functionality and comprehensive solutions to clients. These types of partnerships not only create new and valuable technologies through acquisitions but also give new and existing customers a reliable source for "outdated” technologies or discontinued legacy-type devices that are still being used in various industries that participate in the ever-evolving world of automation.
