New ASCO Shutoff Valve From Emerson: Combustion System Safety

May 06, 2024 by Damond Goodwin

Emerson has announced a new safety shutoff valve that features an action change response time of less than one second to help facilitate safe fuel oil combustion processes.

Emerson, a global technology and software company, has recently released a new safety shutoff valve for industrial combustion applications. The new valve is designed to help users achieve safe valve shutoff operation in less than one second. Designed with the harsh industrial environment in mind, the new ASCO™ Series 148/149 safety valve is built for extreme conditions.

New Valve for Harsh Environments

The ASCO Series 148/149 safety valve functions as both a safety valve and a motorized actuator specifically made for fuel oil-burning applications and as a safety shutoff valve. The valve can find use in fuel oil recirculation systems as a 2-in-1 device capable of providing users with safety shutoff and fuel control capabilities all in one.

Common Applications of the ASCO Safety Valve

The new valve will find use in many different fuel burning applications in the industrial sector. Emerson has worked to make the valves a reliable and flexible tool for those looking to prevent overpressure situations. In addition, the units can help eliminate safety problems associated with leaks and system malfunctions. These types of scenarios can be dangerous to personnel and lead to health and safety problems should they not be stopped in a timely manner.

The ASCO Series 148/149 safety valve is a single solution that fits a wide variety of tasks and combustion system applications. The valve and the actuator are meant to be used in tandem to create a safety shutoff system in fuel oil applications. When used together, they can create two-way or three-way valve systems capable of providing valve action changes in under one second.

Features of the ACSO Valve

The ASCO Series 148/149 safety valve comes with some exciting features making it a versatile valve for whatever the final application choice may be. The valve is designed for high-pressure and high-flow applications, which help to improve potential system heat output. Fuel oil combustion system performance can be further enhanced as a result of higher allowable oil temperature and pressure tolerance from the valve. This feature enables its use in many different types of fuel-burning systems.

The valve is suitable for outdoor applications with an operating temperature range of -40 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 to 66 degrees Celsius). Users can be assured of valve quality since it features UL, CSA, and FM certifications.

The valves have been made with industry-wide best practices in mind, designed around a brass actuator encased in a die-cast aluminum housing. Manual visual inspection is facilitated through a standard valve open or closed indicator physically located on the housing. Where water intrusion is a concern, an optional Type 4 & IP65 Watertight enclosure version is available; Type 1 & IP10 General Purpose rating is the standard valve configuration. Lastly, Proof-Of-Closure switch and Auxiliary settable position switches are electrical options that can be added to standard valve units.
