i need to interchange the terminlas of a dc motor on a particular event. how can this be done?

You can interchange the armature leads on a dc motor to change rotational direction. However, the motor should be at rest. The dc motor when spinning becomes a generator of sorts if the field is active or is a permanent magnet motor. A braking resistor should be used in conjunction with a dc power rated relay so that the resistor is connected accross the armature for the required stop time, then you can properly interchange the leads using a dc rated contactor and change directions.

With a relay, H-bridge, Bipolar DAC, etc. The ways are almost endless. All you need is a signal that the event has occurred. This can be quite traumatic if there is machinery attached or a large inertial load. You might have to brake and stop between polarities if this is the case.
