Cyber security for virtual environrmnt

Do we need to patch virtual machines?
If we have Windows 10 workstation with VM Player running WindowsXP... Do we need to install and update malware protection in virtual machine (WinXP)
Or updating host only is enough.

should patch the virtuals as well. If someone attempting access from outside, they will not know the difference.....just an IP address.

While running Windows XP in a virtual machine on a Windows 10 host may provide some isolation, it's still important to keep the virtual machine updated and protected against malware. Installing and updating malware protection in the virtual machine (WinXP) is a good idea to ensure that all potential vulnerabilities are addressed. It's also important to keep the host (Windows 10) updated and protected. It's a good practice to have multiple layers of protection.
