Cyber security for virtual environrmnt

Do we need to patch virtual machines?
If we have Windows 10 workstation with VM Player running WindowsXP... Do we need to install and update malware protection in virtual machine (WinXP)
Or updating host only is enough.

should patch the virtuals as well. If someone attempting access from outside, they will not know the difference.....just an IP address.

While running Windows XP in a virtual machine on a Windows 10 host may provide some isolation, it's still important to keep the virtual machine updated and protected against malware. Installing and updating malware protection in the virtual machine (WinXP) is a good idea to ensure that all potential vulnerabilities are addressed. It's also important to keep the host (Windows 10) updated and protected. It's a good practice to have multiple layers of protection.

If there's any chance the VM can be seen from outside your firewalls/VPN, then it needs to be patched.

I run an XP VM for older software, but it's never connected to or visible from the internet. Even fully patched/updated, I wouldn't expose an XP (or Windows 7) VM to the internet unless I absolutely had to. And in that situation, I would find a way to not need to.

Network segmentation and strict access control make a huge difference. I’ve seen too many setups where everything is on one big network with weak permissions, making it easy for attacks to spread.

Yes, you should update both the host and the virtual machine (Windows XP) with malware protection. If the VM is connected to the internet or shares files with the host, it can still be vulnerable to threats, so keeping its security updated is important.
