Generator Protection

Good day for all,

Kindly, I want to understand if a generator can trip in case of high reactive power and how to calculate this target of MVAR: for egg generator of 120 MW active power / gird 60hz / 3600RPM/ 16.5kV,

PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND THIS ISSUE.
Regards

i think if the var comes over than power it will be trip by heat inside the generator. but if the temp winding normal, i think no trip with position

Look at the reactive capability curves for your generator. If you go outside those limits, you can damage the generator. There may be a protective trip on this, but I believe operating outside the limits generally results in overheating which is alarmed via RTD's.

Thanks a lot for you,

That's correct but according to my capability curve the max MVR is 75 MVAR. if my generator exceed this value for egg 90MVAR, we have only generator stator winding temp protection trip in HIGH HIGH temp. so that's mean that the Generator can work with this range of MVAR (90), and we can monitor the winding temp in case we need more MVAR to our equipments.

Awaiting for your help

Heni... the value 75MVAr or 90MVAr is meaningless unless you include the corresponding MW.

Adding them vectorially produces MVA from which current (I) is determined. Heating is proportional to I^2.
