Could a Contactor be described a type of small relay or is it a device used to switch motors?

A contactor is a large relay. They are usually single throw with three or four poles. They may have additional auxiliary contacts for signalling or control purposes.

 

Contactors are essentially heavy duty relays and are often used for switching motors.
