I really don't know too much. But I need to confirm if one equipment communicat using a modbus rtu. How can i verify this using only a laptop.

Do I need to use a special hardware? a converter?

Do I need a special software? can i use the terminal function of windows?

If your LapTop has an RS232 port and the Modbus device also has an RS232 port then no converters are required. Yes, you will need a Modbus RTU Host program and no you cannot do it with the Windows Terminal program. I have a freeware simple ModHost program that I use for such tasks.
