I am looking to implement an OT network that supports IEC 61850 MMS and GOOSE. The IEDs, which are SEL relays, are time-synced via IRIG-B, while the microgrid controller is time-synced via NTP. Would any rugged managed switch that supports IEEE 802.1Q, support the IEC61850 communication between the IEDs and between the IEDs and the microgrid controller? I know there are IEC61850 certified switches like Ruggedcom switches but I need to know if a switch like Moxa EDS-508A would support this communication?

 

The Moxa EDS-508A does not have IEC 61850-3 certification. It may not provide the robustness and specific optimizations that certified IEC 61850 switches offer. If you are in a more controlled environment and don’t anticipate extreme conditions, the EDS-508A can be an economical alternative.
