can anyone explain what is the need of power system stabilizer in generator excitation system?
You should have some kind of manual provided with the exciter regulator (AVR) which has some description of the PSS (Power System Stabilizer).
Have you tried using an Internet search engine to look for any information on PSSs?
A Google search yielded this as the first result:

All PSSs basically function the same. I particularly like the first sentence of the link above:
"The use of Power System Stabilizers has become increasingly important to provide improved stabilization of the system."
Okay. That's good.
But, if look at some of the other search results you will find some very useful information.
