In today’s fast-paced manufacturing environment, achieving higher precision and efficiency in automation processes is essential. As industries strive for more productivity, they are increasingly dependent on components that can handle more complex tasks under demanding conditions. SMC has introduced two new products designed to address some of these challenges head-on: the C55 Series Compact Cylinder and the D-MPG Series Compact Position Sensor. These products represent advancements in precision and versatility, offering solutions for industries that require high performance in tight spaces, low-speed operations, and precise position detection.

C55 Series - Compact Cylinder

The C55 Series Compact Cylinder from SMC could be useful throughout several automated applications. The series provides more options for manufacturers working in constrained spaces with the addition of bore sizes ø12 and ø16. While these sizes aren't compliant with ISO standards (21287), they offer strong performance for various tasks. The ø20 model benefits from an enhanced anti-lateral load capacity of 1.8 times greater than previous models, which was achieved through changes to the bushing material.

One of the standout features of the C55 Series is its extended stroke limit. SMC now offers variations up to 300 mm. Additionally, the C55 Series includes the smooth cylinder variant (C55Y), which operates with minimal pressure starting at 0.02 MPa. This feature allows for stable performance even at very low speeds, as low as 5 mm/s, making it perfect for applications requiring slow, precise movements. Manufacturers will also benefit from the product’s range of customization options, such as the double rod versions (C55W) and specialized models like heat-resistant cylinders and stainless-steel variants. These improvements position the C55 Series as a great tool for industries seeking to improve their automation systems.

D-MPG Series - Compact Position Sensor

The D-MPG Series Compact Position Sensor is designed to detect the stroke position of compact actuators, like air grippers. This sensor is very accurate, with a repeatability of just 0.1 mm. It has a compact head and includes a separate teaching unit that makes it easy to set up. Users can easily adjust the sensor’s settings with a single button, including selecting output modes and adjusting the stroke range.

The D-MPG Series sensor provides several output modes, including single-point, auto-switch, window, and two-point modes, offering flexibility for various applications. Its compatibility with IO-Link further enhances its versatility, allowing it to communicate position values and ON/OFF signals through a single line. IO-Link also simplifies the sensor's integration into larger systems, making data management more efficient.

Consider the challenges of an automated assembly line handling components of diverse dimensions. In such applications, precision is non-negotiable, and the D-MPG sensor rises to the occasion. This system's main function is to measure the position of each part accurately, allowing it to recognize and handle parts that are different in size or shape. This makes it useful in high-precision manufacturing, where proper alignment greatly affects product quality. This application example shows how the D-MPG sensor can enhance both efficiency and accuracy in complex automated processes.

Advancing Industrial Capabilities

The C55 Series Compact Cylinder and D-MPG Series Compact Position Sensor address the growing demands for higher precision, better load capacity, and greater flexibility in industrial automation. By providing enhanced performance in diverse applications, these products offer manufacturers a reliable path toward improving productivity and efficiency in an increasingly competitive industry.
