SMC Launches Faster CY3S Rodless Cylinder for Tight Spaces

The new CY3S Series from SMC doubles previous speeds, improves stability, and fits compact automation systems.

SMC has introduced the CY3S Series magnetically coupled rodless cylinder, a compact pneumatic actuator designed for faster automation cycles and smoother motion. Capable of speeds up to 800 mm/s, the new model can double the performance of some previous versions while keeping compatible mounting dimensions for easier retrofits. With improved wear ring stability, sensor-ready integration, and multiple configuration options, the CY3S targets space-constrained material-handling, packaging, and assembly systems.

Compact Rodless Design with Fast Linear Motion

The CY3S Series uses a magnetically coupled rodless design, eliminating the need for a physical piston rod. Motion is transferred between the internal and external sliders via magnets. Without a rod overhang, it fits easily into tight spaces, making it a good option for compact machines and crowded production lines. Bore sizes range from 6 to 40 mm, and stroke lengths can reach 1000 mm or more, depending on the setup. This makes the series suitable for both light positioning and heavy material handling.

The upgraded CY3S Series can reach linear speeds up to 800 mm/s and uses the same mounting dimensions as the CY1S-Z. This lets you increase cycle speeds without changing your mechanical layout, helping to reduce downtime during retrofits.

Improved Stability Through Mechanical Enhancement

Higher speeds in rodless systems can affect stability if loads are not well supported. The CY3S Series solves this by extending the slide block's wear ring by up to 30%. This improves contact stability and reduces vibration during use. These updates help the cylinder run smoothly at higher speeds, even with guide deflection or uneven loads. As a result, the CY3S Series delivers both speed and steady motion quality throughout its stroke.

Flexible Configuration and Control Options

The CY3S Series offers several configuration options to suit different system designs. Users can choose either a bilateral or a centralized piping layout, depending on space and pneumatic routing requirements. There are also options for rubber bumpers and shock absorbers to help manage costs and impacts. Stroke adjustment is possible with bumper bolts, adjustment bolts, or external stoppers, allowing engineers to control positioning and end-of-stroke behavior.

To meet modern control needs, the CY3S Series includes slots for auto-switches, allowing sensors to be attached directly to the cylinders. This makes position detection and wiring easier, and helps with integration into PLC-based control systems. It is especially helpful for applications that need precise feedback at the end of the stroke or at intermediate positions.

A Practical Upgrade for Faster Automation

The CY3S Series is a good fit for industrial settings such as material handling, pick-and-place automation, packaging machines, and assembly lines where space is limited. Its compact design, higher speed, and stability help improve performance without increasing equipment size.

As more industries seek pneumatic solutions that improve performance within existing mechanical constraints, products like SMC’s CY3S Series fit into existing designs without major changes. For engineers who want to speed up cycle times without losing stability or increasing equipment size, it offers a balanced solution that combines better performance with easy integration.
