Captron Announces UL Certification For Touch Buttons and LED Signals

Captron, a well-known leader in capacitive push buttons, announced that its CANEO series10 touch buttons and LED signals are now UL Listed. The certification process ensures that these buttons meet safety and fire standards and can be trusted to perform reliably.

CANEO Series10 Touch Buttons and LED Signals

The CANEO series10 features capacitive push buttons designed for panel mounting in machine and process control. Capacitive push buttons often require less maintenance than mechanical push buttons because they have fewer (if any) moving parts. They detect a change in the electrical field to activate, rather than mechanical motion. Dust, moisture, and fatigue failure of springs are common failure modes in mechanical buttons, but they do not affect capacitive buttons.

The CANEO series also offers several stainless steel models for hygienic operations. They are suitable for pharmaceutical and food and beverage manufacturing where cleanliness is essential. Furthermore, without mechanical motion, there are fewer places for particles to become trapped and cause contamination.

UL Listing for the U.S. and Canada

A UL Listed device is not simply a logo stamped into a component. Instead, it signifies that this device meets a set of well-established criteria, as tested and verified by UL. UL is a third-party laboratory that can evaluate components from a neutral perspective, providing “just the facts” about the device in test. They can test processes, personnel, facilities, and products, such as these push buttons and LED signals.

Specifically, the CANEO series now meets NKCR - Auxiliary Devices requirements and is evaluated for UL 60947-1 Edition 6 and UL 60947-5-1 Edition 4. The series passed and was issued US Certificate UL-US-26116388-0, making these components available for machine builders in the United States.

The CANEO series10 also meets several Canadian standards under NKCR7 – Auxiliary Devices Certified for Canada. They were evaluated using CSA C22.2 No. 60947-1:22 and CSA C22.2 No. 60947-5-1:22 and were issued Canadian Certificate of Compliance UL-CA-2685547-0. These certifications are similar to the ones issued in the United States, but each country has its own requirements that differ slightly.

The environmental type certification varies with the specific model. Models CS10S, CS10H, CM10S and CM10H are rated UL Type 4X. Models CS10K and CM10K are rated UL Type 1. All models are UL Listed, enabling machine designers to determine which product and environmental type certification is required for their application.

UL Listed for Certified Safety

Many consumers fail to recognize the importance of UL certifications. They simply reach for an extension cord and expect it to be safe; they expect a smoke detector to work as designed, and so on. They may take for granted that these items are often UL Listed. An unlisted device may be a safety hazard; it has not been tested to meet the rigorous standards that other devices have.

With online marketplaces teeming with copycat products, the importance of UL Listed devices has only become more important. A knock-off component, poorly copied from another device and sold by an unknown vendor, carries with it plenty of risk. Even a push button from a shady vendor may cause a short and start a fire, or simply overheat and melt the plastic body.
