Don’t Burn Connections: Phoenix Contact Simplifies Wiring with Clever-Click

Phoenix Contact’s new HEAVYCON Clever-Click carrier eliminates the usual wiring grind by simplifying the assembly of modular heavy-duty connectors in tight spaces.

If you’ve ever had to wire or rework a high-pin-count heavy-duty connector, you already know where the time goes. Screws get dropped, tools barely fit, and one loose terminal can mean pulling the whole assembly back apart. For something that’s supposed to be rugged and repeatable, connector assembly is still surprisingly manual.

Phoenix Contact has addressed that problem with the new HEAVYCON Clever-Click modular insert carrier frames. The design replaces screw-based mounting with a tool-free, click-in latching mechanism that allows modular contact inserts to be installed quickly and locked into place inside HEAVYCON housings without fasteners.

Tool-Free Assembly Inside the Connector

The Clever-Click carrier frame is built around a simple mechanical latch. Modular contact inserts are pressed into the frame until an audible and tactile click confirms proper seating. The same click-in action is used to secure the assembled frame into the connector housing. No screws. No torque checks. No special tools.

The Clever-Click system can minimize your typical manual steps in connector assembly, such as soldering individual wires, while also reducing the number of knockouts required for different types of connections. The latch feedback clearly indicates when the insert is fully seated, reducing rework and installation errors.

Ground connections utilize Phoenix Contact’s Push-in Technology, allowing tool-free termination of the ground conductor. Unlike traditional screw terminals, this can be done even after the frame is installed in a panel-mount base, which is crucial for tight enclosures or retrofitting existing panels.

Modular Power, Signal, and Data in One Housing

The Clever-Click frames are designed for use with HEAVYCON modular contact inserts, allowing power, signal, and data modules to be combined in a single connector. This allows each connector to be tailored to the application rather than relying on fixed layouts.

The power modules are rated for currents up to 300 A, making them suitable for energy storage systems, server racks, and other high-current industrial equipment. That same connector can also handle low-level signals or data lines, reducing the number of separate interfaces needed. When a modular layout isn’t required, Phoenix Contact offers fixed-position contact inserts that use the same click-in latching approach. These versions fit standard HEAVYCON EVO and STANDARD housings and keep the same tool-free installation process, just in a simpler, fixed layout.

Designed for Assembly Efficiency

There’s no shortage of connection terminal designs on the market, but Phoenix Contact kept the Clever-Click approach simple. The contact inserts use a push-in terminal that locks into place without tools. Removing fastening steps reduces manual assembly and helps standardize build times in panel production. The carrier frames are compatible with existing HEAVYCON housings, so the click-in system can be used without changing enclosure designs or connector layouts.

Heavy-duty connectors aren’t an area that sees frequent mechanical innovation, but small changes can have an outsized impact on day-to-day work. By replacing screw-based mounting with a click-in carrier frame, Phoenix Contact’s HEAVYCON Clever-Click system aims to reduce assembly time and simplify installation while maintaining the same electrical and mechanical performance expected in industrial environments.
