Storage and Transfer Gauges

It doesn’t matter if storing a liquid, a gas, or a gas in a liquid state—multiple measurements must be monitored at all times when storing or transferring these fluids. Temperature, pressure, and product-level gauges/sensors are a few of the common measurement devices used in the oil and gas industries. When dealing with liquids or gasses that are dangerous or stored at high pressures, these gauges and sensors need to be accurate and reliable.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

Natural gas is a fuel found worldwide. The problem with natural gas is storing or transporting the gas in a pressurized vessel. If the vessel were compromised, the high-pressure gas would rapidly escape and be quite flammable. By liquifying the gas, storing or transporting it becomes less dangerous as the liquid is no longer flammable, doesn’t require high-pressure storage, and takes up 1/600th of the volume.

To liquify the gas, producers cool the product to -162 °C. The liquid is non-toxic and non-corrosive, so the conditions of the vessels will not degrade over time due to the LNG. Many companies transport LNG over roadways and oceans every day without incident.

Tank Gauging

When monitoring a storage vessel's level, temperature, or pressure, gauges that operate at the storage temperature and pressure are necessary. Some products are stored at room temperature and atmosphere pressure. These are ideal conditions, but some products, such as LGN, require extremely low temperatures. These low temperatures will require special instruments designed to operate well below -200 °C.
