Hilscher’s netFIELD App Connects PROFINET to IIoT for Efficiency

The netFIELD App by Hilscher bridges PROFINET and IIoT via MQTT, enabling real-time data exchange for predictive maintenance and optimized production processes.

News February 10, 2025 by Austin Futrell

Modern industrial environments rely on data exchange, yet many manufacturers struggle to connect legacy PROFINET networks with emerging IIoT applications. Traditional systems were not built with IIoT in mind, leading to inefficiencies, limited data visibility, and missed opportunities for optimization. Hilscher’s netFIELD App PROFINET Device offers a solution by transforming PROFINET networks into edge-enabled gateways, allowing real-time data exchange through MQTT. This integration ensures manufacturers can leverage IIoT-driven insights without overhauling their existing infrastructure, optimizing both production processes and predictive maintenance capabilities.

PROFINET Integration with IIoT

The netFIELD App PROFINET Device is designed to be compatible with any host system supporting netX network controllers, making it adaptable to various industrial environments. As a containerized application, it runs independently of hardware constraints and functions as a PROFINET IO device to enable real-time data exchange. By acting as a bridge between PROFINET controllers and MQTT-based platforms, it enables smooth integration of IIoT services.

Configuration is simplified through GSDML file uploads, where users define input/output modules, DeviceID, VendorID, and other key parameters. The app then manages cyclic PROFINET IO data exchange, with a capacity of 1,436 bytes per transmission in both directions. An intuitive user interface allows for precise configuration, ensuring communication between PROFINET controllers and IIoT applications. As an MQTT client, the app publishes PROFINET data as JSON-formatted payloads whenever output values change and subscribes to input updates, which are reflected in the next PROFINET cycle. This real-time messaging structure enables continuous data tracking, allowing manufacturers to optimize efficiency, detect performance trends, and automate responses based on live operational data.

Unlocking New Efficiency Through Real-Time Insights

By integrating real-time monitoring into PROFINET systems, the netFIELD App enhances industrial efficiency in several ways. Predictive maintenance becomes more effective as manufacturers can detect early signs of equipment failure before downtime occurs. Process optimization is also improved, as production data can be analyzed to identify inefficiencies and enhance workflows. With structured field data flowing into IIoT platforms, businesses gain a deeper understanding of operations, leading to smarter, data-driven decision-making.

For example, In a manufacturing plant producing automotive parts, integrating real-time monitoring into the PROFINET system enhances process optimization. Sensors collect data on temperature, vibration, and production speed. The netFIELD App identifies a machine running at a higher temperature, leading to the discovery of a malfunctioning cooling system. After repairs, the machine operates normally, reducing downtime and increasing efficiency. By addressing this small issue, the plant avoids unexpected failures, maintains steady production, and saves time and costs.

Part of a Larger Ecosystem

The netFIELD App PROFINET Device is a key component of Hilscher’s broader netFIELD ecosystem, which provides scalable solutions for edge computing, remote device management, and cloud analytics. By integrating IIoT capabilities directly into PROFINET networks, Hilscher ensures that manufacturers can modernize their operations.

As industries continue their digital transformation, bridging the gap between traditional automation and modern data-driven manufacturing is essential. The netFIELD App PROFINET Device simplifies this process, making industrial data exchange more efficient, accessible, and future-ready.
