Datalogic has released a new connectivity platform aimed at organizing Internet of Things (IoT) devices into one coherent system. The Datalogic Connect IoT platform enables organizations to collect and analyze data, manage assets, and remotely control deployed devices from a single interface. Users can integrate all Datalogic devices with Datalogic Connect, and the software is kept up to date and functional using a subscription-based model, ensuring greater security, advances, and continuous customer support.

Addressing IoT Complexity

IoT-enabled devices have the potential to improve data collection and asset management while maximizing uptime. However, the rapid growth of IoT has led to many facilities having a hodge-podge of devices, data silos, and troubleshooting nightmares. Instead of just providing solutions, IoT often comes with its own headaches.

New devices may be cumbersome to add to an IoT system. Manual entry of models, serial numbers, ports, and other parameters is one such problem. Some control systems are proprietary, binding the company to a specific vendor, decreasing the scalability and making the whole system fragile.

The Datalogic Connect IoT Platform

The new Datalogic Connect platform rises to some of these enterprise challenges. It allows IT personnel to interface all Datalogic devices through a single control hub, no matter where devices are deployed. Furthermore, it has a built-in autodetect feature that simplifies the deployment of new hardware modules, i.e., no more manual configuration.

Datalogic Connect’s open platform approach enables customers to integrate existing systems into a complete control system easily. Ultimately, the platform is a unified system that makes managing IoT hardware possible through a single control point.

Device Visibility, Configuration, and Analytics

Datalogic states that the three key capabilities of its IoT platform are device visibility, configuration, and analytics. In terms of visibility, Datalogic Connect will track every Datalogic device, including connectivity and battery status, warranty details, physical location, and other relevant variables.

Connect will also maintain configuration data, push firmware updates to devices automatically, and allow users to maintain uniform security policies and schedule tasks, all from a single interface. This is a major timesaver over manually updating devices with patches and security upgrades that result in downtime, IT personnel hours, or are potentially not done at all.

Another core advantage is that Connect tracks the status and provides analytics of devices' usage and health. This allows users to perform predictive maintenance on IoT hardware instead of reactive maintenance, reducing downtime. This data can also be used to find trends, such as underperforming machines and unusually heavy usage.

Optimizing Operations From a Single Platform

As industrial and commercial ventures leverage new IoT devices to manage and expand their capabilities, the ability to tie these devices under one control umbrella is a key advantage. While many factories and industrial facilities will benefit from the Datalogic Connect system, Datalogic points out that commercial facilities, such as retail stores, shipping facilities, and others, can also see the advantages of this system. Barcode scanners for checkouts and inventory monitoring can be linked under Datalogic Connect, which can predict when products should be restocked, when handheld scanners need battery recharging, and many other functions.
