SMC Expands EX600 With Wireless I/O and New PROFIsafe Support
New wireless I/O and PROFIsafe capabilities expand SMC’s EX600, enabling flexible connections for robot tooling while reducing field wiring and complexity.
SMC has expanded its EX600 modular field I/O platform with the EXW1-RD wireless I/O remote and integrated PROFIsafe support. The wireless module can provide digital I/O at moving tooling such as robot grippers, reducing the need for large multi-conductor cable runs through drag chains while supporting connections for grippers, valves, and sensors. Meanwhile, PROFIsafe support extends the EX600’s safety networking capabilities, allowing safety I/O to communicate over an industrial Ethernet network and helping machine builders reduce wiring and simplify machine integration.

Wireless I/O In The Factory
The latest addition to the EX600 lineup is the EXW1-RD. A modular wireless remote that is installed in the EX600 alongside digital and analog I/O. Once installed and configured, the EXW1 provides digital I/O over a wireless connection. The EXW1-RD does not expose the entire EX600 backplane to the wireless network; it exposes only the I/O on the EXW1-RD. Inputs and outputs connect via M12 grommet connectors and are IP67 rated. Configured for 16 inputs, 16 outputs, or 8 configurable inputs/outputs, the EXW1-RD provides modularity and flexibility for automation while using a proprietary secure wireless communication protocol.

Like the EXW1 platform, the new RD version requires communication with a base unit. This base unit then provides the hardwired communication to the control system over Ethernet/IP or PROFINET. The system was designed for installation on moving tooling, such as a robot gripper. Instead of running large multi-conductor cables through cable tracks, a wireless remote such as the EXW1-RD can provide digital I/O at the end effector to drive grippers and pneumatic valves and read part presence.

Added Safety Protocols
Safety signals over a dedicated industrial network are quickly becoming the standard topology for medium and large automated equipment. The CIP Safety and ProfiSafe protocols use time-sensitive messages over an industrial Ethernet network to monitor door latches, servo positions, and reset light curtains. This technology reduces wiring and additional components, enabling faster, easier commissioning. The EX600 has safety I/O modules that allow OEMs to integrate safety inputs and outputs in the field, instead of running cables all the way back to the control panel. Recently, SMC has added ProfiSafe to the list of supported safety protocols.
The safety I/O module supports 16 inputs and 3 outputs, is SIL3 rated, and communicates over CIP Safety and ProfiSafe. These additions to the EX600 accessory lineup let machine builders and factories easily and safely send and receive signals while reducing time to market with fewer cable runs. The future of automation looks less crowded with unsightly cable tracks, thanks to wireless I/O and network-safe I/O.
