control problems in micromachining

HI!
What can you tell about possible application of automatic control algorithms beyound PID in these areas (micro and nano) especially micromachining - for example what type of control (lin, multivariable, nonlin,fuzzy.) is used for tiny mirror positioning in optical switches?
