Why do some communication networks use resistance to terminate the bus? How is the value of this resistance calculated?

Take a look at this web page. It goes into the characteristic impedance of cables and why you need to terminate them.

Remember, data communications at high rates acts like a RF signal (think radio transmitter). Typical things you would do with DC or 60 Hz. AC doesn't apply at mHz data rates.
