Flow meter selection

what is the most suitable flow meter for measuring the amount toluene and hexane entering into a mixing tank from a underground storage?

pipe OD is 2", ambient temperature 30-35deg C

is Magnetic Flow meter good for the job?

A Magnetic flow meter is a bad selection for this application because of the low conductivity of toluene. You can go with an Inline Ultrasonic flow meter or a Coriolis flow meter.

If you would like to send me your process data I can show you how well these two meters will perform and answer any other questions.

Other technology than what Mark recommended that goes very well on this applications are Turbine Flow Meter, Orifice Plate, Vortex, Averaging Pitot Tube etc. Every technology has its own advantages or disadvantages to other technology, it is up to the end user or process engineer to decide the best suitable to him or her. For this application, if you are looking for good accuracy & reliability I would recommend Coriolis Flow Meter. Little expensive but worth investing if process is critical.

sorry for the late reply, after comparing the quotations for turbine, Coriolis and Ultrasonic flow meter, i think we will go for the turbine flow meter since we are operating on small scale mixer (biggest batch is 3.5 MT).

what are the advantages and disadvantages of turbine comparing to coriolis and ultrasonic?

Alee, please send me your process data and I will size out a Coriolis flow meter and provide you with a sizing to show you accuracy and pressure loss with a Coriolis.

Advantages of Coriolis vs. Turbine are most importantly Coriols has no moving parts. Turbine is mechanical and in the short term it is less expensive, long term upkeep and maintenance the Turbine will end up costing more. Also, Coriolis can give you multiple outputs, you can get flow, density, temperature and sometimes viscosity measurements from a Coriolis.

Let me know if you would like pricing.

Before you choose a solution make sure that you understand how accurate the measurement must be over what range of flows. If you know that, you have a chance of finding the most economical meter.
