ABB has recently announced its significant move towards expanding industrial sustainability with two key initiatives: a USD 17 million investment to upgrade and expand its Low Voltage (LV) motors manufacturing industry in India, and the introduction of the country's first locally made IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motors. Reinforcing ABB's commitment to positioning India as a global manufacturing hub for its motion solutions, the investment, as stated by ABB's President of IEC Low Voltage Motors, Stefan Floeck, goes beyond just increasing capacity, as it reflects the company's long-term vision for India in the manufacturing space.

India's First Locally Manufactured IE5 Motors

The introduction of the IE5 range marks a notable milestone in India's industrial development. Engineered and manufactured locally, these ultra-premium efficiency motors, compared to IE3, offer up to 40% less energy consumption. Available in power ratings ranging from 45 kW to 1000 kW, the range caters to various applications, including heavy manufacturing and process industries.

Unlike conventional efficiency motors that rely on rare-earth materials, ABB's IE5 motors utilize Synchronous Reluctance motor technology. This proven induction technology eliminates reliance on scarce resources while maintaining robust performance and reliability. The magnet-free design enables cooler and low-maintenance operation, reducing downtime and increasing efficiency. The design also allows smooth operation with Direct-On-Line (DOL) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) systems, offering versatility across different industrial environments.

Engineered for India's Industrial Environment

The new IE5 motors bridge the gap between the need for ultra-premium efficiency and practical industrial reliability, making them ideal for the metal, cement, textile, pharmaceutical, food, beverage, and paper industries.

According to Sanjeev Arora, President of Motion Business and IEC Low Voltage Motors at ABB India, the reduced reliance on rare earth metals reflects India's commitment to sustainable, high-performance solutions built for local conditions, aligning with the country's push toward industrial decarbonization.

A Legacy of Innovation and Sustainability

ABB's investment and product launch continue its 75-year legacy in India, marking another milestone in its effort to achieve sustainable industrial growth. Throughout the years, ABB has continuously driven advancements in motion technology, helping industries boost productivity while reducing their carbon footprint. ABB aims to reduce delivery times and improve product availability by enhancing local manufacturing capabilities.

Driving the Next Era of Industrial Sustainability

As global industries accelerate their transition to cleaner operations, there is an increase in the adoption of premium and ultra-premium high-efficiency motors. Replacing older, low-efficiency motors can reduce electrical demand, consequently lowering the overall carbon footprint. In addition to using energy-efficient variable speed drives, efficiency motors like ABB's IE5 motors offer a potential option for industries seeking a balance of performance and eco-friendly solutions. As India drives the next era of industrial sustainability, ABB's investment also showcases the company's vision for expanding the future of the motion industry globally.
