All-in-One SWD Drive from IDEC Streamlines AGV and AMR Design
IDEC’s SWD Safety Wheel Drive merges wheel, motor, gearbox, and safety features into one compact unit, simplifying AGV/AMR integration and reducing costs.
The rise of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) within industrial environments has brought about new challenges for manufacturers and system integrators, particularly around mobility and safety. These platforms often require complex, multi-component systems that are often very costly and time-consuming to install during manufacturing. As the demand for more efficient and reliable automation solutions increases, there is a pressing need for innovations that can simplify this integration while enhancing performance and safety.

IDEC Corporation’s latest innovation, the SWD Safety Wheel Drive, has been designed to meet these challenges head-on by creating an all-in-one solution that integrates a wheel, gearbox, motor, encoder, and safety drive into a single compact unit, streamlining the integration of powered motion into industrial mobile platforms. By reducing the number of components required, the SWD simplifies both design and installation, cutting engineering time and installation costs by up to 50%, which improves overall cost for industries relying on AGVs and AMRs, providing not only efficiency but also enhanced safety.
How Does the SWD Improve Integration?
One of the most significant hurdles for developers in the AGV/AMR space is integrating multiple components such as wheels, gearboxes, motors, and safety systems that are often very limited in space. The SWD combines all essential parts into a single unit, thus reducing the complexity of traditional drive systems. The SWD allows for faster deployment and fewer potential points of failure, and the unit also supports 24 V DC power, safe I/O signals, and CANopen communication, among other features that can simplify the existing automation system, which can significantly lower installation costs and make the price point a little more tempting for an OEM.

What Makes the SWD Safe and Reliable?
Safety Will always be a concern for mobile robots, especially in environments where human interaction can be involved. The SWD is built with compliance to the ISO 3691-4 standard, which governs AGV/AMR safety. By incorporating features like Safe Brake Control (SBC), Safe Direction (SDI), and Safe Speed Limiting (SLS), the SWD ensures that these platforms operate within safe parameters. It also includes a SIL3/PLe-rated safe motor disconnection (STO) for additional protection, and its robust housing is IP66-rated, meaning it safeguards internal electronics from dust and water, making it ideal for a variety of industrial settings.
How Does the SWD Benefit Users and Manufacturers?
The SWD will be available in different configurations, such as the SWD 125 and SWD 150, and is modular, allowing the end user to get exactly what they need for their process. The wheel drive can support varying load capacities, and its heavier model is capable of supporting up to 700 kg. For developers, IDEC offers a pre-packaged development kit that includes everything needed to integrate the SWD with existing systems, and the kit will also allow for rapid testing and development to reduce the time to market
As industries move toward greater automation, the SWD Safety Wheel Drive by IDEC offers a simple, safe, and cost-effective solution to the complex mobility challenges faced by AGVs and AMRs. The SWD has all key components in one compact unit, allowing for a quicker design process, reducing costs, and enhancing safety.
