Beijer Electronics introduced the Nexto XF, a modular PLC platform that combines high-speed control, expandable I/O, and Linux-based computing. The five-model lineup offers configurations with digital I/O and optional analog inputs and outputs, while the platform can execute up to 1,000 PID loops in less than 2 ms, according to the company. Native Docker support allows engineers to run additional applications alongside PLC control, and CODESYS-based BCS Tools provide programming, simulation, debugging, and commissioning. Industrial communication protocols, plus built-in VPN, firewall, and web visualization features, support integration and remote monitoring across machine control and edge computing applications.

The Nexto XF is intended for machine builders and system integrators working with standalone machines, distributed control systems and edge computing applications. The platform offers several CPU configurations, industrial communication options, and built-in remote access features, allowing engineers to choose a controller based on their equipment's I/O and processing requirements.

High-Speed Processing and Modular I/O

The Nexto XF lineup includes five CPU models with different I/O configurations. According to Beijer Electronics, the platform can execute up to 1,000 PID loops in less than 2 ms, making it suitable for applications that require several control loops to operate simultaneously. All five models include 16 digital inputs, nine of which are high-speed, and 16 digital outputs, including eight high-speed outputs. It also supports high-speed counter inputs, pulse train outputs (PTO), and pulse-width modulation (PWM) outputs.

The BCS-XF300-B and BCS-XF300 are the two basic configurations, providing digital I/O without built-in analog channels. The BCS-XF315 adds 10 analog inputs for applications that need to monitor signals from devices such as pressure, temperature, or level transmitters. Upgrading to the BCS-XF325 adds two analog outputs alongside the 10 analog inputs, letting the controller send analog control signals to compatible equipment.

The BCS-XF325-W rounds out the lineup with the same I/O configuration as the XF325: 10 analog inputs and two analog outputs. Beijer Electronics does not specify additional differences between these two models in the supplied information. Overall, the five configurations give engineers a choice between digital-only control and controllers with built-in analog I/O, depending on the equipment being automated.

Linux, Connectivity and Remote Access

The Nexto XF runs a Linux environment with native support for Docker containers and CODESYS applications. Docker lets applications run in separate containers, giving engineers a way to add edge computing or data-processing functions alongside conventional PLC control.

For industrial communication, the Nexto XF supports OPC UA, MQTT, Sparkplug B, Modbus, CAN and serial interfaces, along with USB and memory connections. These options allow the controller to communicate with field devices, other PLCs, and higher-level systems. Beijer Electronics also includes built-in VPN, firewall, and web visualization capabilities for remote access and monitoring, while conformal coating helps protect the electronics in harsh industrial environments.

Programming With BCS Tools

The Nexto XF uses Beijer Electronics' BCS Tools software for programming and configuration. Built on CODESYS 3.5, the development environment supports IEC 61131-3 programming languages, including ladder diagram, function block diagram, and structured text.

BCS Tools combines programming, simulation, debugging, and commissioning in one environment. Engineers can configure fieldbus connections, test control logic, and monitor variables without switching between separate applications. The software is available in Lite, Basic, Professional, and Advanced versions, depending on project requirements.

The Nexto XF includes several CPU options with different digital and analog I/O configurations, along with support for industrial communication protocols. It also runs Linux and supports Docker containers, allowing engineers to handle data processing tasks alongside normal PLC operations. Beijer Electronics’ CODESYS-based BCS Tools software handles programming and configuration and also provides simulation, debugging, and commissioning functions.
