PBC Linear Offers Larger Linear Actuators for Heavier Applications

June 25, 2024 by Damond Goodwin

PBC Linear has expanded the MTB actuator series with the MTB 105, which features higher speed, more force, and an extended reach of up to 6 meters of stroke.

Seeking to expand its linear actuator options with a more powerful actuator with an extended reach, PBC Linear has recently announced the release of the new MTB 105.

PBC Linear Expands MTB Actuator Series with MTB 105 Actuator

The MTB 105 is the largest of the PBC actuators in the MTB series and boasts a higher payload and increased linear force capabilities over the existing lineup, which includes the MTB 42, MTB 55, and MTB 80. The MTB Series are belt-driven linear actuators capable of delivering a useful solution to diverse systems requiring high precision and accuracy.

MTB Series Features

The MTB series of linear actuators offers users key features for many of their automated tasks. The new actuator series is built to handle heavy loads by using urethane multi-stranded steel-corded reinforced belts that provide extra strength. Since the belts are stronger, they allow the MTB 105 to reach a linear thrust capacity of 2,750 N with a horizontal payload of 7,500 N and a maximum stroke of 6 meters.

An enclosed structure guarantees optimal and efficient operation of the actuators, especially in environments where shielding against environmental particles is essential for long-lasting performance and durability. Each of the four actuator models is equipped with stainless steel band-strip seals located on the top of the unit, reinforced with magnetic strips to securely seal and effectively prevent the ingress of contaminants into the unit.

Perfect for high-speed operations and rapid accelerations, the MTB linear actuator series maintains consistent speed capabilities regardless of size. Each of the four high-speed linear actuators achieves a maximum speed of 3 m/s, with the capability to accelerate and decelerate at up to 3G.

The durable external and internal components offer a max thrust of 2750 N and 6 m stroke length.

To ensure enduring precision, belt tension is preset during the final assembly and inspection process. In addition, the MTB series of linear actuators feature an adjustable belt tension, giving users the ability to maintain peak accuracy and precision through routine maintenance.

Applications of the MTB 105

Each of the four linear actuator sizes offers various drive configurations, including left mount, right mount, and dual mounted setups. This versatility ensures that each belt-driven actuator is suitable for diverse applications and spatial limitations. Some common applications include:

  • Large format printers
  • Medical equipment
  • Mail sorting systems
  • Packaging machines
  • Quality control
  • Assembly lines

In advanced printing environments, maintaining precision and uninterrupted linear motion is crucial for accuracy. The MTB linear actuator enables seamless movement of printing carriages beneath inkjet print heads, ensuring precise, efficient, and high-quality printing. This capability enables printer manufacturers to uphold high positional accuracy across expansive work areas in poster printing systems.

Medical equipment manufacturers depend on rapid and efficient automation for effective sample handling. Powered by steel-reinforced timing belts, MTB high-speed linear actuators deliver high acceleration and rapid travel speeds, maintaining robustness, lightweight design, and corrosion resistance with their anodized aluminum construction. By assembling multiple high-speed linear actuators into an XYZ gantry, a larger working area is achieved.

Automated mail sorting system

A mail sorting system using the MTB 042 has processed 1 billion pieces of mail annually.

For efficient mail sorting systems, PBC Linear created specialized MTB 042 linear actuators tailored to meet the rigorous demands of the application. This solution incorporates external Mini-Rail linear guide support, a strengthened carriage, and enhanced seals to resist dust infiltration. The optimized system enables uninterrupted operation of this type of sorting system. One example processes up to 1 billion mail pieces annually without unplanned shutdowns. The MTB 105 will continue to expand the potential applications of linear actuators.
