Smarter Valves and Cylinders Arrive in SMC’s New Lineup

SMC releases enhanced valves, flow controllers, and air cylinders to improve automation reliability, simplify installation, and reduce maintenance needs.

News July 10, 2025 by Austin Futrell

SMC has rolled out a suite of upgraded automation components designed to tackle key pain points in industrial control. The lineup includes the AP20-D modular relief valve, the FC3W IO-Link flow controller, and new variations of the CG1 and CG3 air cylinders. These enhancements aim to simplify piping, stabilize fluid flow, and improve space efficiency while reducing setup time and maintenance overhead. Together, they give engineers more flexibility to build reliable, future-ready systems in space-constrained and performance-critical environments.

AP20-D Series Modular Relief Valve

SMC’s upgraded AP20-D Series relief valve is designed to maintain stable pipe pressure by releasing excess flow to the atmosphere when needed. Traditionally, branch piping was required for connection to downstream equipment, creating more installation work and potential leakage points. The new modular approach eliminates that branch piping, reducing labor and simplifying maintenance. Engineers can now choose from multiple pressure gauge options, including square-embedded or round indicators, and even add a built-in silencer to reduce exhaust noise. These upgrades result in a cleaner installation with fewer parts and easier operation.

FC3W Series Flow Controller for Water

When upstream water pressure fluctuates, maintaining a steady flow rate can be tricky with old-school manual valves. SMC’s FC3W series brings a modern solution with stepless, electronically controlled flow adjustment. With a rated flow control range expanded to 5–40 L/min and ±5% accuracy, the FC3W delivers reliable performance even under shifting pressures. Adding IO-Link connectivity opens a door to remote diagnostics, status monitoring, and valve positioning. In other words, engineers can identify and address issues before they become failures, a significant advantage for applications such as printer roller cooling or semiconductor wafer production.

CG1 Series Air Cylinder Upgrades

SMC’s CG1 Series air cylinders are getting several important new variations. With single-acting, direct-mount, and end-lock types now available, the CG1 line gains more flexibility for tighter design spaces or special safety requirements. One helpful touch: a cylinder with rod end brackets is now standardized, eliminating the hassle of separate bracket orders. Additionally, piping can be connected at every 90-degree angle, allowing designers to place cylinders where they’re most effective. Whether customers choose a double-acting, single-acting, or end-lock variant, the CG1’s modular design ensures compatibility with previous models, avoiding costly redesigns.

CG3 Series Compact Air Cylinder

Space constraints continue to challenge factory layouts, and the CG3 Series addresses this exact challenge. Compared to its CG1 sibling, the CG3 trims up to 51 mm off the overall length and cuts weight by as much as 24% while offering the same functional reliability. Available with either male or female thread options and equipped for auto-switching, the CG3 makes installation easier in tight spots. Bore sizes range from 20 mm to 100 mm, allowing engineers to size the cylinder to their specific application without compromising speed or force. The CG3 helps designers achieve a smaller footprint, keeping machines lighter and more efficient.
