Frame 9E dual fuel gas turbine with water injection as the nox control

Hi All,

We are currently running a frame 9e dual fuel gas turbine (as originally designed) with diesel fuel only. Although the turbine is designed for both gas fuel and diesel operation, it has never run in gas fuel due to unavailability of gas.
Currently we are looking forward to receiving gas and would like to know if the water injection skid used for liquid fuel nox control can also be used for gas fired nox control? Fuel nozzles installed are GE BREACH type fuel nozzles capable of receiving gas, diesel and water.
Any PID's or data available on such design would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Yoganak,

It would be somewhat surprising for the machine to be incapable of using NOx water injection on both fuels--unless some purchaser's representative(s) at sometime during the requisition or construction phases asked for some portion of the NOx water injection system not to be installed.

TYPICALLY the same NOx water injection skid is used for both fuels, but we can't review the machine-specific P&IDs to see what the NOx water injection skid looks like. It would be somewhat unusual for there to be two separate skids and piping systems for NOx water injection for gas and distillate fuels, but it is not impossible for there to have been an intention to have two skids/systems, just unusual.

Again, the answer to your question lies in the machine-specific Water Injection P&ID, and a visual inspection of the system to see if all of the components for NOx water injection for gas fuel are present. (Usually, the biggest difference between NOx water injection are the NOx water injection flow-rates for the two fuels: gas fuel usually requires less water injection than distillate fuel does.)

We won't have the P&IDs for the system in question--only the people at the installation where the machine is located will usually have the machine-specific P&IDs for a machine. Yes; typically, many machines share similar systems but if the GE-design Frame 9E was packaged and provided by GE Belfort (France) or some other packager (BHEL, etc.) there may be some differences. Water injection for NOx reduction usually occurs in the same area of the combustors for either fuel on a dual fuel machine with conventional combustors (non-DLN combustion system).
