Reverse Power

Dear,

Basically, we have five Caterpillar diesel generators (each 1.5MW) for our own drilling utilities. Normally two generators were on line and added third generator due to more demand. What happens here, started the third engine, synchronized manually (attempted four times) generator with bus, observed reverse power flowing (-320kw) and reverse power protection never took any action, and manually opened the breaker and stopped the engine. Why didn't the breaker trip through reverse power protection? (Protection settings are found alright as per recommendations.)

Regards,

1 - Is reverse power indicator separate from trip system? Is it calibrated?

2 - Is there a similar phenomenon on other gensets?

3 - Is voltage setting of subject genset ok? Problem may arise if output power is slightly low so generator tends to become motor.

I suggest first of all have the governor of the 3rd DG checked for proper operation as well as the droop settings of all the sets.

1. All generator protection in DEIF multi generator protection relay, it includes reverse power protection.
2. All the generator have similar phenomenon.
3. Voltage setting is correct. After sync, found reverse power.
