Beckhoff has recently announced its latest innovative solution, the XTS EcoLine motor module, a cost-saving addition to its eXtend Transport System (XTS). Designed as a more affordable entry to advanced mechatronics, the new motor module delivers 95% of the performance of the existing XTS module at 55% the cost per length. The module is also fully compatible with the existing XTS portfolio, making it suitable for various cost-sensitive applications.

Compact Design with Extended Length

The new XTS EcoLine motor module doubles the length of a standard straight XTS module, featuring a length of 500 mm, which increases flexibility in transport, all while maintaining the exact grid dimensions as the standard modules. Despite having a lower price point, the new motor module retains some of the performance specifications offered by the XTS family, supporting fast accelerations of up to 10 g and high travel speeds of up to 4 m/s, making the solution suitable for high-throughput production environments.

Technical Specifications of the New Motor Module

The new XTS EcoLine module boasts an absolute accuracy of 0.70 mm and a repeatability of 0.075 mm. It is ideal for hybrid systems and assemblies where less than a millimeter tolerance is acceptable. The module also provides a range of force outputs for each mover, which includes nominal forces of 30 N and 45 N, and peak forces of 80 N and 105 N, depending on the configuration, enabling the solution to handle high payload while maintaining dynamic response.

Flexible Use and Hybrid Applications

Beckhoff has highlighted that the EcoLine module can be used with high-precision XTS modules for a more dedicated transport path. For instance, manufacturers can create systems where the new motor module handles standard transport paths, while high-precision modules handle process stations requiring stricter tolerances. This combined hybrid approach lowers the system's overall cost without affecting the production quality. Industries such as battery manufacturing, packaging, assembly, lab automation, and pharmaceuticals are potential areas where the new motor module can be adopted for flexibility and lowered operational cost.

Broadening Access to Linear Transport

By reducing the cost barriers to entry into the XTS technology, Beckhoff is potentially opening a channel for widespread use in intelligent linear transport. For industries with limited automation budgets, the EcoLine motor module offers a suitable option to enhance flexibility and efficiency in production.

With the growing industrial need for scalable mechatronics solutions, where industrial designers can align their systems directly with their specific process needs rather than investing in high-end hardware, advanced solutions like Beckhoff's EcoLine module ensure customers tailor systems to budget and performance needs. This new innovative solution, therefore, has the potential to allow small labs, startups, and midrange manufacturers to explore and implement intelligent transport in ways that were previously cost-constrained.
