Bihl+Wiedemann Expands ASi-5 Counter Family With New Compact Module

Bihl+Wiedemann, a safety and automation equipment manufacturer, has expanded its family of ASi-5 counter modules to include even more functions and uses. The newest counter addition, the BWU4996, features a compact design that can be used in the cable duct.

ASi-5 Counter Modules

Bihl+Wiedemann’s ASi-5 counter modules are devices used in industrial automation to count and measure various parameters, such as positions and speeds. They are part of the company’s proven AS-interface (ASi) system, a network system that connects components such as sensors and actuators in automation applications.

The new ASi-5 counter module BWU4996 features a compact design not previously seen in the ASi-5 products. The BWU4996 is small enough to fit into cable ducts, making it more versatile and easier to install in tight spaces. Although the BWU4996 component is smaller, it still features high-bandwidth data and short cycle times. Users can choose a 32-bit value range or transmit up to four independent 16-bit counter values in just 1.27 ms. However, unlike the series’ previous counter module models, which had four 2-channel counter inputs, the new module only has two 2-channel counter inputs, making it more suitable for smaller applications. If a counter input isn’t needed, it can also be configured as a digital input, adding flexibility to the component.

The BWU4996 Counter

The BWU4996 module provides convenient parameter assignment through the Bihl+Wiedemann Software Suite. This allows users to easily configure each counter input individually. This flexibility ensures the module can be customized to meet specific application requirements, making setup and adjustments simple.

The ASi-5 counter module BWU4996 is ideal for applications where a PLC is unnecessary, such as counting products on a production line, positioning tasks in automated systems, or measuring the speed of moving parts within a system. With an IP67 rating, users can also feel confident in the component's robustness, as it is dust-tight and can withstand immersion in water.

Counter Functionalities 

The BWU4996 counter module offers a variety of powerful functions that enhance its versatility in industrial applications. Under the counter category, users can configure continuous and one-off counting, periodic counting, presets, gating, capture, comparison, and rotation direction settings. The frequency measurement functions include one-off and continuous frequency measurement and filtering by gate time. For more specialized tasks, the cycle time measurement features allow for one-off and continuous period duration measurements, filtering by mean value, and an adjustable timeout. These functions provide users with a high level of customization to meet specific application needs.
