Gefran Tackles Factory Complexity with the G-Mation P6 PLC Platform

Gefran’s new G-Mation P6 platform simplifies industrial automation with app-based flexibility, cloud integration, and real-time control.

Industrial automation is evolving fast, and with evolution comes a growing challenge. All engineers, let's hear our favorite word, complexity. As manufacturers adopt digital technologies, from real-time sensors to machine-learning-enabled analytics, they’re finding that making factories smarter can also make them more challenging to manage. Machine builders, in particular, are under pressure. Gefran noticed and set to the task of designing a better solution.

The company is offering machine builders its G-Mation platform with the P6 PLC at its core, potentially a system to cut through complexity without compromising on quality. G-Mation combines high-performance industrial control with an app-based, cloud-friendly architecture designed to bridge the gap between operational and information technology on a single platform. It’s modular, open, and perhaps most importantly, built with both engineers and operators in mind.

An App-Like Architecture

At the heart of the G-Mation platform is a shift in thinking. Instead of hardcoding every function into the system, Gefran built the P6 PLC around Docker container technology. This is the same technology that powers much of today’s cloud computing. This allows machine builders to add new capabilities such as app integration. If the time is right, it can be pretty neat to make industrial machines move right from a smartphone. Need a new diagnostic tool or visualization tweak? Just deploy an app. No need to rewrite code or stop the machine.

Despite this flexibility, the platform doesn’t sacrifice performance. Control tasks are handled in real time using EtherCAT. The P6 can manage two separate EtherCAT networks, supporting a variety of topologies, which include ring, star, or tree, to give engineers the freedom to design systems their way.

Designed for Simplicity

Where traditional PLCs often struggle to connect with modern IT infrastructure, G-Mation is designed for it. The P6 supports MQTT and OPC UA protocols widely used in Industrial IoT, as well as Euromap interfaces common in plastics processing. It also works with both SQL and non-SQL databases, making it easier to sync with analytics tools or enterprise platforms like ERP systems.

For system integrators, the inclusion of low-code and no-code configuration tools makes integration faster and more accessible. And with cybersecurity in the spotlight across Europe, the P6 is designed with standards like the NIS2 Directive and the upcoming Cyber Resilience Act in mind, ensuring machines are not just smart but also secure.

The P6 also includes an embedded web server that generates HTML-based HMI pages that are viewable on any browser. These pages automatically scale to the device’s screen, offering a user experience that's more like a modern app than a traditional industrial interface. For customers using older systems, support for Java-based UIs remains to offer a smoother transition to the new platform. For those ready to upgrade, the HTML interface provides drag-and-drop customization and intuitive layout options with no coding required.

From Plastics to Possibilities

While G-Mation is broadly applicable, its initial rollout focuses on plastics processing, a market where Gefran has deep roots. Pre-configured templates are already available for common machine types like extruders, injection molders, and blow molders, across electric, hydraulic, and hybrid systems. Gefran is launching the G3 I/O modules and V44/V45 HMI panels alongside the P6 controller. Therefore, offering a full ecosystem that supports both new installations and retrofits. While the focus is heavy on plastics processing, the company is also opening the door to partnerships with international OEMs to bring G-Mation into new industrial sectors.

The rise of smart manufacturing doesn’t have to come with rising complexity. Gefran offers a platform that’s as powerful as it is approachable, one that speaks the language of modern IT, adapts to changing needs, and brings clarity back to industrial automation. Simplicity will always be key to processes.
