Igus Launches Hygienic, Self-Lubricating Linear Actuator
Designed for hygiene and efficiency, the drylin® SHT actuator features self-lubricating, corrosion-resistant materials, ensuring safe, low-maintenance beverage production.
Igus has launched its self-lubricating drylin® linear and drive technology that ensures safe and efficient operations in beverage production tasks. With the growing need for high hygiene standards in beverage industries, the innovative solution by Igus is designed in compliance with the guidelines from the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) and DIN EN 1672-2 that safeguards consumers from contaminants arising from food processing machinery.

Key Features of the drylin® SHT Linear Actuator
Igus’ drylin® linear and drive technologies feature a gap-free design that minimizes the risk of contamination and simplifies the cleaning process, allowing manufacturers to meet evolving hygiene requirements. Designed from stainless steel, the rounded shaft and the lead screw featured in the new solution are resistant to corrosion ensuring longevity and resistance to aggressive cleaning agents. The lead screw nut design provides ample space for flushing, further simplifying the cleaning process.

The drylin® linear actuator uses FDA-compliant silicone seals for its truss assembly to prevent ingress of moisture and dirt. Compliant with the EU 10/2011 Regulation and FDA food safety certifications, the polymers used in its design ensure safety and hygienic standards. The new linear actuator technology eliminates the need for external lubricants as it incorporates solid lubricants that improve cleanliness, unlike oil and grease. This lubricant-free technology lowers the frequency of lubrication and cleaning, reducing overall maintenance.
Designed for Hygienic Applications
The SHT linear actuators stem from Igus’ commitment to expanding its portfolio of hygienic solutions, such as its world's first food-grade plastics sliding carriage for linear guides. Additionally, this commitment is shown by the company’s drylin® ZLW toothed-belt axis and modular bearing systems used for a range of applications from kitchen robotics to automated inspection systems.
According to the product manager, Michael Hornung, hygienic design is not optional for beverage manufacturers seeking hygienic solutions to streamline their operations. Michael added that the lubricant-free linear actuator is designed to enhance safety and production efficiency in the food and beverage industries. The versatility of the new actuator makes it compatible with a range of bottle sizes and shapes, simplifying integration in bottling plants without the need for additional components.
Transforming Beverage Production
With the growing standards of hygiene and efficiency in the beverage production industry, Igus’ drylin® SHT linear actuator and its broader product lineup stand in to ensure manufacturers enhance their operational efficiency and comply with regulatory standards to safeguard consumer safety. With its innovative, self-lubricating technology, Igus continues to transform production processes in hygiene-sensitive industries.
