Oriental Motor has expanded its CVD Series of EtherCAT-compatible stepper motor drivers with five new models, giving users more flexibility in multi-axis motion control. The lineup features four 2-axis drivers and one 4-axis driver. This expanded range of options enables machine builders to select the most suitable driver configuration for their specific equipment and installation requirements.

Expanded Configuration for Multi-Axis Systems

The new CVD Series drivers feature both communication and power wiring for multiple axes in one compact, integrated unit. This design helps simplify wiring and saves space in multi-axis equipment.

The 2-axis models are available with or without a mounting plate and offer straight or right-angle connectors. Right-angle connectors are useful when space is tight and several units are installed side by side, as they help reduce wire interference.

The 4-axis model comes with a mounting plate and straight connectors. These options simplify the process for equipment designers to integrate stepper motor control into machines with varying installation requirements.

EtherCAT Communication and Control Functions

The CVD Series leverages EtherCAT communication to deliver precise, synchronized motion control across multiple axes, making it well-suited for systems requiring coordinated operation of several stepper motors.

These drives also feature automatic electromagnetic brake control with direct encoder data import. According to Oriental Motor, such functions can reduce the load on the host controller and streamline programming by enabling the driver to manage certain control tasks independently.

The CVD Series also gathers encoder data and monitors for position errors, allowing the system to detect when the motor’s rotation exceeds predefined limits and to activate an alarm. Additional alarms, such as for main circuit overheating, are accessible via EtherCAT communication.

Compatible with both 2-phase and 5-phase stepper motors, the series provides designers with greater flexibility for diverse applications.

Motor Compatibility and Electrical Specifications

The expanded stepper drive lineup is compatible with four-lead, 2-phase bipolar stepper motors from the PKP series, alongside compatible 5-phase motors from the PKP and PK series. Each driver supports motor rated currents ranging from 0.5 A to 3.0 A per axis, with a maximum input current draw of 6 A for the 2-axis model and 12 A for the 4-axis model.

The drivers operate on a 24 VDC input. Motors featuring encoder voltage output or open-collector output are not supported. System designers must account for these current limits and compatibility requirements, particularly when configuring simultaneous multi-axis motion.

Additional Options for Machine Builders

The addition of these five models expands the CVD Series, providing users with greater flexibility when configuring multi-axis stepper motor control systems. Improved connector and mounting options help designers streamline cabinet layouts, simplify cable management, and strategically place components.

The need for flexible industrial solutions is growing. Automation engineers and machine builders can now take advantage of a broader range that combines multi-axis control, EtherCAT communication, and integrated functions within a compact driver platform.
