Redefining HVAC Efficiency: Danfoss Introduces Alsmart Universal Controller

March 08, 2024 by Bob Odhiambo

Danfoss has announced the next generation of HVAC programmable controllers to upgrade an already extensive portfolio in building management and control solutions for heating and cooling.

A company known to provide energy-efficient solutions for power and drive industries, Danfoss, has recently announced the latest addition to its line of programmable controllers, the new Alsmart Universal Controller for HVAC. The new platform is a solution that allows end users and manufacturers to enjoy sustainability with high-efficiency levels while driving towards reducing carbon footprints and energy consumption.

The Alsmart Universal Controller platform

Designed to meet current and future technological advancement needs, the new Alsmart Universal Controller platform features a combination of flexibility, high cybersecurity protection levels that adhere to stringent IEC 62443-4-2 standards, a range of communication options, advanced control features, and powerful and user-friendly programming through languages that appear standard in many industrial controllers.

Alsmart features an impressive (and expandable) memory capacity and power that allow it to handle even the most demanding tasks with ease. Additionally, extra inputs and output modules can be added using its patented side-by-side connector technique, which optimizes flexibility for future extension.

When it comes to communication protocols, the new Alsmart offers flexible support of standard industrial protocols like CAN bus, SNMP, BACnet, HTTPS, MQTT/S, and Modbus. Rich data sharing, remote commissioning, live debugging, and remote fleet software updates and management are all made possible by this flexibility.

User Interface and Display Options

Offering multiple display and user interface options, the Alsmart’s snap-on display also comes with a magnetic lock that can easily plugged into the control. The display unit also offers the flexibility of downloading updated firmware in multiple different units in the field or on the production line. The wide range of multiple communication options allows developers to use a range of different user interfaces by linking into a building management system (BMS) or using more advanced HMI units.

Industry Perspective on Alsmart Universal Controller

According to the director of EC&S development at Danfoss, Michael Kellerman, the components in the HVAC industry need to work together more intelligently for data chiller centers, heat pumps, rooftop HVAC units, or DOAS system buildings, assisting in meeting the regulations relating to climate and their goals. Kellerman also added that with flexibility in the communication option of Alsmart as the brain of such systems and sub-systems, communication is simplified between BMS or directly to IIoT clouds of OEM manufacturers, building maintenance companies, or building owners.

HVAC Controller of the Future

As the need for smart technology in the control of high voltage increases, the demand for a sustainable solution that favors the environment while offering efficiency is also at the forefront.

Solutions like the Alsmart universal controller platform change the HVAC industry with impressive user-friendly features and flexibility, while not leaving behind the aspect of a greener solution. Additionally, with the shifting regulations and growing customer demand, the dynamic HVAC industrial landscape needs integration and coordination between the building and the various systems components, and the Alsmart Universal Controller is positioned to be a top choice to cater to these needs.
