SEW-Eurodrive: New IE5 Rated DR2C High-Efficiency Motor

The new DR2C from SEW-Eurodrive helps create long-term value for users looking to improve plant efficiency over time, featuring a 50% lower energy loss over asynchronous motors.

SEW-Eurodrive recently announced its latest IE5-rated energy-efficient electric motor, the DR2C. This IE5 rating for motors represents a jump in efficiency in electric motor technology, offering significantly lower energy losses than previous generations.

As industries push for more sustainable and cost-effective solutions, these ultra-efficient motors may become a good choice for conveyors, robotics, and automated production lines. By reducing energy waste and improving motor performance, IE5 motors contribute directly to lower operating costs, reduced carbon footprints, and improved overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in manufacturing.

The New DR2C: IE5 Ultra-Premium Efficiency Motor

SEW-Eurodrive has developed the DR2C motor with IE5 “Ultra Premium” efficiency to reach a market of manufacturers looking to realize the long-term gains associated with efficiency improvements. The business decision for equipment purchases lies in the careful calculation of any higher upfront costs being offset by money saved over time, paying back year after year with energy cost reduction. These motors can achieve higher cost savings by reducing losses while operating with greater reliability compared to similarly-rated motor designs.

How Does it Achieve Such High Efficiency?

In order to achieve such high efficiencies, the motor uses what is called Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) technology. The technology involves rotor-mounted permanent magnets that are embedded into the rotor itself instead of mounted to the surface of the rotor. This translates to a higher torque density, meaning that the motor can run more efficiently than other motor technologies.

In the case of asynchronous motors in the same power class, the permanent magnet motors achieve a 50% reduction in energy use over standard motors with a rating of IE3.

This increased efficiency is available throughout the entire speed range of the motor, meaning that users can expect to see a reduction in energy use no matter the circumstance. In addition to increased energy efficiency, the DR2C comes with the added benefit of size reduction when compared to other motors. For example, a motor of the same power rating of the asynchronous variety will be two frame sizes larger than the DR2C. A smaller size means higher energy density for tight spaces and has the added benefit of further reducing energy loss during start-up because less inertia is needed to spin the motor.

Key Features of the DR2C

There are several key features that potential users of the DR2C should be aware of. For example, a low noise variant is available in the non-ventilated (TENV) option. The permanent magnet construction also lends several benefits, including smooth torque delivery at low speeds, making them a good candidate for VFD applications. It also ensures no rotor losses, reducing heat generation that leads to further energy loss.

Built in soft start and speed regulation help to extend the lifetime of the motors by reducing shock loads. The motors can also be paired with a multitude of different options like condition monitoring sensors, brakes, encoders, resolvers, and connectors.

Finally, these motors can be paired directly with SEW-Eurodrive gear drive systems without an adapter, allowing for easy integration into standard systems.

Increased Efficiency Produces Long Term Savings

In the search for higher efficiency and precision in industrial automation, the new DR2C motor from SEW-Eurodrive looks to set a new benchmark. Designed for seamless integration into modern manufacturing systems, the DR2C leverages the latest advancements in IE5 ultra-premium efficiency motor technology, helping industries reduce energy consumption while enhancing performance.
