Ethernet is a common infrastructure used for communication between sensors and controllers within automated equipment. Today's vehicles are increasingly adopting the same technology for their sensors and vision systems, making in-vehicle networks more advanced.

Antaira Technologies, a global supplier of industrial IT networking equipment, has released a high-speed, high-bandwidth five-port PoE switch with a compact footprint and surface-mounting features. The industrial unmanaged switch targets IP surveillance, transportation vehicle networks, and industrial applications.

FNP-0500G-T Industrial PoE Switch

Most vision systems today support Power over Ethernet (PoE). This technology enables a device to communicate and receive power over a single Ethernet cable. The caveat is that the switch needs to support PoE. Antaira’s latest Ethernet switch, the FNP-0500G-T, is capable of PoE connections. Designed with a low profile, the industrial switch is ideal for use in small enclosures and cabinets.

The FNP-0500G-T supports network speeds up to 1000Tx over a standard RJ45 connector. The combined ports support up to 120 W on a 56 VDC input. The switch can be powered from 48 VDC to 56 VDC through a standard TB-6P connector with screw terminals. The switch is IP30-rated and has an operating temperature of -40°C to 75°C. The switch can be wall-mounted, or, for industrial applications, a DIN-mount bracket is included.

PoE in Cameras

Vision systems are constantly placed in tight spaces and are often required to be as compact as possible. These requirements make PoE an excellent technology for vision systems, but the PoE switch needs to support the required speed and bandwidth. Antaira’s FNP-0500G-T supplies enough current to power most vision systems and is designed to handle the high-bandwidth demands of today's cameras.

Automotive Vision Systems

Gigabit Ethernet speeds are known to support the bandwidth vision systems needed to transmit images to a control system. Today’s vehicles already contain a complex maze of wires and cables, and as we add more advanced vision systems, this maze will need to grow. If the automotive world converts to using PoE technology, that maze might just shrink. By using a PoE switch such as Antaira’s FNP-0500G-T, a complete network of cameras and sensors can be developed without the addition of excessive wires.
