New Solid-State Relay From Carlo Gavazzi Optimized for DC Loads

April 08, 2024 by Austin Futrell

Rapid switching of load devices requires solid-state components, like the new SSR from Carlo Gavazzi, designed for 3 A loads up to 60 V, targeted for key applications in vehicle electrification.

Switching loads is an integral part of control automation. Indeed, the very name ‘control’ means to dictate the flow of power from a source to a load, whether it’s electrical, mechanical, or fluid transmission. There are many ways to switch electrical loads, but for large loads that require a very fast switch response, the solid-state relay (SSR) is a very common component.

Carlo Gavazzi, a leading name in electrical components, has announced the release of the latest in the 60-volt RM1D series of solid-state relays: introducing the RM1D060D3.

This new addition, the 3 amp DC-rated version, directly responds to the market's evolving needs. The decision was informed by market research, which revealed a significant demand for DC solid-state relays of 3 amps or less. This expansion is a testament to Carlo Gavazzi’s commitment to staying ahead of industry trends and meeting customers' evolving needs.

One significant driving force behind this addition is the surge in vehicle electrification. As the automotive sector transitions towards more electric-powered vehicles, there is a need for reliable electrical components, precisely the niche fulfilled by Carlo Gavazzi's RM1D solid-state relays.

What are Solid-State Relays?

Solid-state relays (SSRs) are designed to switch DC or AC voltage loads using MOSFETs, SCRs, or TRIACs (more info about these devices). They offer some advantages over mechanical relays, including durability, silent operation, fast response times, and resilience to vibration and shocks. These qualities make DC SSRs the preferred option for efficiently switching DC loads in various applications.

One caution with SSRs is the non-zero on-state resistance, leading to heat dissipation when running near the upper current limit. This requires the careful use of heatsinks and mounting considerations which electromechanical switches do not need to observe.

Options and Features of the RM1D060D3 Solid-State Relay

With this latest extension, the RM1D series now offers a comprehensive range of options, ensuring there's a perfect fit for every application. Whether your project requires a 3A, 10A, 20A, 50A, or 100A solid-state relay operating at up to 60VDC, a 20A or 50A option for up to 200VDC, or even a 10A solution for up to 500VDC, Carlo Gavazzi's RM1D Series is ready to meet your electrical needs.

The RM1D060D3 shares the same essential characteristics as its counterparts in the series with its low power dissipation output MOSFET and fully solid-state design, ensuring trouble-free operation over many switching cycles. Its 4 to 32 VDC control voltage range offers flexibility in various setups. Moreover, its IP20 touch-safe cover ensures safety in handling, while its capability to switch frequencies up to 1,000 Hz adds versatility to its applications.

The RM1D060D3 also has integrated output overvoltage protection, featuring transil (transient voltage suppression) technology for enhanced safety. Additionally, LED indications signal the presence of control voltage, ensuring clarity regarding operational status. With a robust temperature rating of up to 80ºC (176°F), these relays are suitable for demanding environments. Furthermore, they provide a high isolation level, with an impressive 3750 Vrms between input, output, and backplate, guaranteeing reliable performance and peace of mind in various applications.
